Topic: “3D/4D Planning for Cranio-facial and Reconstruction Surgery”

Prof. Dr. Hans-Florian Zeilhofer is chief physician of the Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and director of the Hightech Research Center of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, both at University Hospital Basel, Switzerland. He is president of the Swiss Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Prof. Zeilhofer's clinical work is focused on maxillofacial re-constructive surgery employing 3D computer-based guidance. He performs surgery for correcting abnormal shape and location of the mandible as well as of cranio-facial malformations, tumor surgery, traumatology of the facial skull and plastic and reconstruction surgery. His research concentrates on the development and clinical implementation of 3D/4D planning, simulation, and virtual reality for cranio-facial and reconstruction surgery. Furthermore, he is working in laser therapy and laser surgery, tissue engineering, and the development of biomaterials for customized implants for the oral and maxillofacial area. Prof. Zeilhofer has published more than 420 articles and is member of the scientific editorial board of “Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery” and “International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery”.

Topic: “MRI guided Interventions, Surgery and Focused Ultrasound”

Professor Melzer has over 20 years of experience in the development of medical technology for laparo-endoscopic surgery, interventional radiology, interventional & intraoperative MRI and image guided robotics, surgical instrumentation, surgical robotics and Nitinol devices and Magnetic Resonance guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS). He and is named on more than 100 patents and over 200 publications, more than 500 oral and poster presentations. His major expertise is the development of novel surgical and interventional tools with particular regard to MR compatibility. Prof. Melzer has served as co-editor of three medical journals, co-founder and partner of six start-up companies in the medical technology for MRI field and consultant for major vendors in interventional medicine. He serves as organizer or chairman of various medical conferences and board member of six medical and technical societies. He is Professor of Medical Technology and Founding Director of the IMSaT Institute for Medical Science and Technology at the University of Dundee, Scotland, as well as Professor of Computer Assisted Surgery and Director of the Innovation Centre for Computer Assisted Surgery – ICCAS at Leipzig University, Germany.
